Welcome to my website, I am Sr Software Manager at GE Transportation.
Posting this in case it helps someone else and as a reminder.
Recently I transferred a hard-drive between two machines. The second machine came up with no internet connection. A lot of debugging later it turns out that udev was renaming the network interface from eth0 to eth4. However, /etc/network/interfaces was only configuring eth0.
The following is how to setup swap on an AWS instance. This will prevent MySQL from crashing when it runs out of memory.
sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/swapfile bs=1M count=1024
sudo mkswap /swapfile
sudo chmod 0600 /swapfile
sudo swapon /swapfile
Make the following modification to /etc/fstab.
/swapfile swap swap defaults 0 0
On the latest version of ubuntu this stops the warning “Apache2 Could not reliably determine the server’s fully qualified domain name” everytime you restart apache2.
echo “ServerName localhost” | sudo tee /etc/apache2/conf-available/fqdn.conf
sudo a2enconf fqdn
